Cache of the Month: April

With close to 40 finds in the month of April, this time of year always feels like a launching pad for a new geocaching season.  Sure we continue to geocache in the winter months, but there’s always more enthusiasm when the sun is shinning and the snow has melted.

For April, we decided to pick the Bell Island Baker’s Dozen Series as our geocache(s) of the month.   The series was quick and easy, contained a simplistic puzzle and the final location offered up a nifty little view.  Plus it had the added bonus of bringing us back to Bell Island, that ferry ride always seems to up the adventure factor… and the mandatory feed of grease from Dick’s Seaview Lounge and Restaurant is always a good reward!

While you’re over there, there are some other excellent geocaching opportunities! Some of our favorite geocaches are over there, you can read about them in previous blogs:

Nageira’s Treasure (GC6EDE)

Old Cemetery Cache (GC1W7G6)

NL’s Who’s Who Series

Don’t let the conversation stop here, please let us know what geocache you found this month? Which one was your favorite? Leave us a comment below.

Cache of the Month: March

Temperatures are rising, the ground is thawing, snow is melting and many of the snow-covered geocaches are starting to come out of hibernation.   All this has led to a desire to get back out on the trails and enjoy the sunshine and warmer weather.  This month we found 22 geocaches, a vast improvement over the beginning of 2013 (January = 6 geocaches, February = 11), but we’re a little behind compared to last year after the first three months (2012 = 67, 2013 = 39).

Two weekends ago, on a particularly fantastic mid-march day we did some hiking near Red Head in Flatrock, NL.  This was actually our first time in the area, so we really had no idea what to expect.  Suffice it say that this area is a must visit for anyone who fancies a magnificent cliff side ocean view!     With little hesitation, we’re labeling Top of Redhead (GCX3JB) as our favorite for this month.  There a multiple access points to this cache, we however parked at the end of Redhead Road and walked in, about a 4.7 km hike round trip.  There are a 3 or 4 other caches in the vicinity of this cache, but we only did two caches on this trip, promising to return for the others when there were icebergs in view.  We’re especially looking forward to Iceberg Alley Vista (GC30BXW).

Cache of the Month: February

We found 11 geocaches this month, and practically anyone of them could have taken the title of Cache of the Month for February 2013.  However, there can only be one!

This month, we chose (perhaps not surprisingly given its name) Waterline #9 – A Challenge for Gilligan and Maryjane (GC4351Y).  It’s not very often we get called out like this, and we appreciate you admitting that one of our caches was deserving of a “revenge” hide.  But frankly, we think you can do better! Ha!

In all fairness, this is an excellent hide and is part of a very scenic and fun series of caches.  The Waterline Series (hidden by Trail Walkers) includes nine caches and  takes you to a Grand Concourse trail that follows the waterline running from Windsor Lake to St.John’s.

Cache of the Month: January

2013-01-20 10.51.29

With only six caches, all of which were part of the same series, we had little choice but to choose the Weebles Give You The Willies Series for our first cache of the month in 2013.  These geocaches were quite enjoyable, as are all of the  Weebles’ caches. They always add a good themed element to their hides, making them a little more special than a typical nano in an evergreen.

The other great thing about these finds was the weather/snow conditions that were present when we found them.  It was early on a Sunday morning when we headed out on the woods trail.  The air was crisp but not to cold and there was a thin layer of powder on top of the base layer of snow.  This was especially enjoyable as it had been a few days since we received any rain.  For those of you not from the Avalon Peninsula, this may seem normal for the month of January.  However here in St. John’s the usual trend is 10-15 cm of snow followed by 5mm of rain.  This “ruins” the snow and makes it much harder to enjoy it while cross country skiing or snowshoeing. But on this day, conditions were perfect!

Over To You…

What was your favorite cache that you found this month? Do you have any good stories to share about it? Let us know in the comments section below!

Cache of the Year: 2012

In discussing our geocaching adventures from last year, we decided we wanted to take our Cache of the Month series one step further, and pick a single geocache to represent our favorite cache that we completed last year.  Just to clarify for anyone new to the blog, each month we pick out one geocache that we found during that month to name as our Cache of the Month.  These caches are typically the ones that put a smile on our faces, that make us scratch our heads, or that we keep referring to over and over again on the drive home after a long day of geocaching.  We’re also looking for good coordinates, a worthy container, a nice location, and some element of fun in the hide/find.

In reviewing our favorites from the last 12 months, we narrowed the selection process down to four geocaches that really stood out above the rest.

January -Attraction (GC39B4X)

  • One of the first caches we did this year, it stuck with us as perhaps the best example of an interesting container/hide.

April -Barracks Restrictions (GC3A5XF)

  • While the cache is good, it’s our experience in finding it that really makes it stand out.  Did you miss it the first? Read about our interesting encounter while looking for this cache here.

July - Bell-a-Vista (GC1BB1)

  • An oldie but a goodie.  Although this cache has been hidden for some time, we saved it for our 2,000th find. Spectacular view!

October - Geppetto’s Cache (GC1YW32)

  • Our favorite puzzle/mystery cache from the last year, a unique puzzle made for a memorable find.  Finder beware!

However, there can only be one winner and our choice for Geocache of the Year goes to……

Bell-a-Vista (GC1BB1), Hidden by Aviex

The reasons include:

  1. The magnificent view that you get when approaching ground zero.
  2. The geocache happens to be one of the oldest remaining caches in the province.
  3. The container was dry, with a good set of coordinates and a helpful hint.
  4. There’s a lovely trail leading up to the top of the hill
  5. In terms of effort required to reach the cache it is minimal in terms of the reward at the top; and
  6. We just all around enjoyed this find!

A big thanks goes out to anyone whose geocache we’ve ever found, together as hiders and finders we make this sport the great adventure that it is! And if we’ve never found one of your geocaches, well we’re trying to get there one cache at a time.  Keep on caching folks!
